Today? I sat and read The Demolished Man. It’s been a while since I’ve read it, and the post grad-school reading felt a bit different. Mostly because now I know what a cathexis is, and I didn’t the last time I raed (it’s a part of the plot).
I’ll be settling back into The Innocent Mage this evening, I think, but later on. I’ve reopened a half-written short story and I’ve been working on that this evening (hurray! Writing again!). I also took time to watch the Premier’s address. The talk was titled ‘Address to Alberta,’ but I can think of some other titles for it.
‘Better Get Ready for Spending Cuts.’Or ‘Call Me Keystone: Pleas for a Pipeline,’ Or ‘Sales Tax, Here We Come!’
It’s worrisome. There are definitely cuts to come – ‘difficult choices’ sounds like a promise of increased wait times for access to health care, cuts to arts, and reductions in education funding. I don’t know what she means when she talks about programs and services that aren’t sustainable over the long term. What does that mean?
Well, we’ll just wait to find out.
(Rocky and Bullwinkle announcer voice) “Will Heather adjust to budget cuts? Will Alberta take cues from the budgetary ‘wacky hijinks’ of their neighbors to the south? Don’t miss our next episode, ‘Alberta: The Taxes of the North’, or ‘God Keep our Loan Glorious and Interest-Free’” ;-)
On a more serious note, down here, “difficult choices”/”not sustainable long-term” usually = “social service/education/infrastructure cuts.” Of course, our health care system is legendary (for all the wrong reasons)…
Exactly what I was thinking, Anthony!
re “The Demolished Man”… I read the Wikipedia page on it. Holy cow! Must have been quite a read.
It’s been years since I’ve read Bester, and I realize I don’t remember either The Demolished Man or The Stars My Destination very well. I remember the basic ideas of both, and remember liking them, but it may be worth revisiting them at some point.
