Wednesday. What can we say about Wednesday? I can say that my credit card has been cancelled – there was a call from the fraud department today. Fraudulent charges were attempted this morning at Kmart and Sears (we don’t even have a Kmart in Calgary), so they blocked it and shut everything down. I suspect a local taxi company – I used a credit card to pay for the cab when I brought mom home from the hospital after the car accident.
Hard not to feel misanthropic about stuff like this. Some people are real jerks. Although the man from the fraud department was awfully nice, so there was that.
I went through the same thing this month too. Not sure where they got my number but the idiot decided to pay his Bell Mobility bill with it. Sigh. Now just waiting for the investigation to be completed and the charges to be removed. Like you, my CC company folks were very helpful.
We’ve had to replace card(s) because some company functionary lost a laptop or their systems were otherwise compromised. So carelessness or outright theft… Either way, we get the hassle and yes, our card company(s) have been very supportive.
Modern life, I guess. Using the “chip & pin” system that they’ve had in Europe for some time would make our cards more physically secure, I suppose. With the added benefit of being more useful when/if we travel ;-)
I also got a call from my bank when I tried to use my card in Canada.
Oh, wait, that might have been because I forgot to tell them I’d be traveling, not because of any weird Canadian thing. You do have magnetic money and no pennies, though, so who knows? Way I hear it, you don’t even have Kmarts in Calgary! ;)
In all seriousness, though, yeah, some people are definitely jerks.
We have chip & pin on all our cards here, too, so now we have to guard our pin entry as at some places the bad guys have installed cameras to catch your pin number. I think there is something to be said for cutting off the hands of thieves, cutting off the gas pedal foot of people who run red lights. But that’s just my opinion.
(finishing your mom’s post for her) … cutting off the [bleep] of rapists.
Credit card companies are apparently getting really good at catching fraud. Mine caught something last fall and were very polite/fast/professional about fixing it. Of course, I had to memorize a new number :(
I thought there was a Thurs or Fri posting here? Maybe I’m in a space/time warp HERE!
