Reading more poetry.

No, I didn’t watch Superbowl. I understand it was a good show – to judge by the number of tweets through the afternoon and into the evening, people seemed to enjoy it. And that’s good. I’m glad.

I mostly stayed in and read this weekend. I was feeling a bit low on Saturday…that ‘I’m fighting something off’ sort of feeling, so I kept to my comfy chair and worked on the 2012 O. Henry Prize Stories, and went to bed early. There was a Saturday afternoon nap, too. By Sunday, I was feeling better, and I moved through several books of poetry.

I’m trying poetry on for size. Not for writing…I’m not a good poet. But I’ve never had much patience for reading it, and I thought I might try to see if that’s something that I can change. So I read three poetry books, and I’m going to keep trying more on to see how it fits. Turns out that the public library has a bunch of ebook collections of contemporary poetry available, and there’s always the classic poetry. Or, as I think of it, the poetry I ought to have read during my English degree and didn’t.

2013 is full of all kinds of new things for me.

Are you trying Mary Oliver on for size? I love her, though I’m not a huge poetry fan in general.

I like Raymond Carver, among others.

I don’t have the patience for poetry either — what a good way to express that, better than, “I don’t like poetry.”

Have you tried Charles Lillard? West coast images/words to live by for this displaced ocean lover. Shadow Weather was GG nominated collection. Also, Rhonda Batchelor – some lovely work in Weather Report.

But poetry is typically shorter than prose. Shouldn’t it require less patience?

I don’t read a lot of it myself, to be honest, beyond what gets submitted to the zine, but there are lots of great collections and poets. I think the last book of poetry I read was by Billy Collins. Quite liked it, too.
